News July 2009
Hello everyone,
Our Chairman Peter Ebdon asked me to contact everyone possible by email to disclose some Very Important News. Some
of you will already know.
At MGLive at Silverstone over the weekend of 10th – 12th July our Centre received the highest accolade within the gift of
the Directors of the MG Car Club. It was the unanimous decision of the Board that we should receive the Nuffield Gold
Cup, which bears the inscription below, which is more than adequate to describe why we won:

how we were now achieving considerable success not just in activities in our region but on various tracks and events around the UK. We have tried to
get out of that habit of dwelling on the past and concentrate on the real job in hand, that is to provide all of our members with activities and news that
they want to be part of. However, in his announcement at a dinner on the Saturday night when the presentation was made to a startled but clearly
overjoyed Peter, the Chairman of the MG Car Club, John Day, said the following words (paraphrased by Peter in his excited message to me). For
evidence of joy, please see the photo attached, with Peter having received the Cup from MGCC President Bill Wallis, with John Day looking on.

“We had risen from the ashes like the Phoenix, rather than taking the easy route of simply throwing in the towel and being merged with another Centre,
as had happened in Scotland, but we took hold of the Centre by the scruff of the neck and breathed life back into it.    We were the first to have a proper
Membership Secretary, the first to have a pre- and post-Abingdon Pride of Ownership Award and we had shown the highest growth in percentage terms
compared with any other Centre in the UK and had therefore "bucked the current economic trend" and although we were the smallest Centre in terms of
numbers he had every confidence that the Tyne Tees Centre were going to be in the very near future, a real force to be reckoned with and it gave him
enormous pleasure to announce that his recommendation to the Board had received unanimous approval.”

When you’re at the bottom, the options are few – stay where you are, become extinct or fight to survive. We chose the third option and it has paid off.
Whilst it is the Committee that arranges events locally, we would not have achieved this award without the growing number of supporters who come
along to Natters, Supper Runs and Major road runs. So this award is for everyone in Tyne-Tees Centre and we say a Great Big Thank You to you all. To
retain it will take a monumental effort, but try we must. We hope to arrange a significant event later this year, perhaps a dinner, when John Day could be
persuaded to bring the Cup from the vaults to have a local presentation. We would like as many people as possible to attend and share in the pleasure
of seeing the Cup, which is so valuable it must stay in secure storage and be let out only with great care. Watch out for further details on our website
and in Safety Fast! If anyone has ideas about how we should celebrate then please let me know.

Finally, slightly off this message: the final major road run this year is the Tyne-Tees Old Speckled Hen Run on 13th September, starting from Slaley Hall in
Northumberland. We now have 60 cars entered out of the 75 limit, so if you haven’t sent off your form and cheque to me, please get your skates on!
Details are on the website and an entry form is in July’s Safety Fast!

….and absolutely finally, those of you who might be concerned about the spelling of ‘shewn’ in the Gold Cup inscription, that’s how they did it in 1936!
Cars were rather different too.

Happy motoring.
